Rich Rarey from Radio World (ex NPR) included some quotes from me in his recent Streaming Guide eBook. Thanks Rich! Here’s an excerpt: We asked SHOUTcast Director of Busisness Development Jonathan Westerling which services broadcast stations are asking for. Westerling said because SHOUTcast’s corporate family now includes the TargetSpot digital audio advertising network, monetization products […]

Traveling through Bryce Canyon National Park in December, we witnessed a neat combination of temperature, snow and sunshine. A brief snow shower coated the pavement, but since the air was so dry, any snow in the sun almost instantly evaporated. The result makes it look like it only snowed in the shadow of the car:

This is me lying across the runway at Ft. Bragg, California airport (82CL). Thankfully there’s plenty of grass on either side of this runway for the planes to land on, but the total width of the asphalt must be only about 12 feet wide! That would make it the thinnest runway in the US that […]

In January 2015 I was pleasantly surprised to get an email inviting me to be a guest panelist on a local trivia show that originates at one of San Francisco’s NPR stations. Since then, I’ve been invited back several times. It’s an honor to be on the air with these guys who have a really […]

KXXL was a post-war station that started in Reno NV. It’s still broadcasting today (2013) as KSGG and has gone through a number of callsigns and formats over the years. The daughter of one of the first owners gave me some pictures from the station that date to the early 50’s. I’m posting them here […]

Phil Frank was a good friend and neighbor. He was also the cartoonist in the San Francisco Chronicle. His first love was MG’s, but as the century turned, he began to lust after a new car: jaguars, specifically the MK2. Here’s the car as Phil purchased it in 2004: Phil completely redid the drive train […]

At long last, I have gotten around to digitizing an interesting piece of radio history. This was a thin plastic record that was given out to radio stations encouraging them to air Kids America. It is a nice summary of the program in its first year, and the audio fidelity isn’t half bad for a […]

For my junior recital I commissioned a new piece. The piece was written by composer Geoffrey Petersen for solo bassoon. I performed the premier in the spring of 1997. I was honored to have Mr. Erb present for the performance. It touched me very much that he stayed for the entire concert.
